Just so you know , jennifer and I actually work in the same office complex on Highway 17 and they just built out the other side of the complex and so we're sitting on the other side like I wonder what's gonna be coming in .

Like I can't wait to see , because I think here in Hampstead we're excited to see these new businesses coming in , and when I saw Tootsie Woodsy's , I was like this is amazing , because I don't know of another one in this area , right ? So I did read online or maybe you told me this in the pre-interview Tootsie Woodsy's is Pender County's first and only yes and only fatal imaging studio . Yes , and also , it's not just someone that's coming in giving you like pretty videos and pictures . You are a registered diagnostic medical sonographer . Yes , ma'am , and you have been doing that for how long ? 12 years now , I think . Just seeing something that comes in that's so new and fresh , I think is something that everyone in Hampstead and in the Topsill area really can't appreciate . I had a 4D ultrasound for my now 11 year old this was back in 2012 and I just thought , as a first time mom , are you a mom ? Yes , yeah , I have three . You have three .

Yes , and how old are they ? They're all spread out in ages . My oldest is 19 . I have a 15 year old and then my youngest is eight .

Honestly , she just finished her first year in college and she's home with us for the summer , so she like it . Super excited . She loved it . She's up at Cornell University in New York and nice , yes , so she's doing really well and loves it there . She's far from home . Yes , I know how heartbreaking was that . It was tough .

The 3D is three-dimensional , where you see the more realistic features of baby . 4d adds motion and HD . It's more advanced technology where you have skin eliminating and shadowing techniques .

Yes , so I provide all digital copies of everything I do for the parents so they can do whatever they want to with all the copies . If they want to make more copies later on , they're more than welcome to . I do print nice 4x6 big glossy prints for everybody too . So depending on the package you get , you have different amount of images that you can get printed or you can pay for extra prints as well .

, let's talk about the additional services , the 8K images . Go to the website , everybody , because you're going to need to see these images . They're the 8K enhanced ultrasound images and if you want to see that baby's face , like I did , before it's born , this is such a great feature to offer people . So tell me how that whole process happens .

So I get a full frontal of baby's face using the 3D HD technology , and so I either go with the best 3D image or the best HD image , and then that's converted into a 8K enhanced ultrasound image , and that's the one that looks like a newborn photo . So pretty .

Okay , and let's talk about your hosted parties . Everyone's doing the gender reveal parties . Yes , I've seen all different ways that they're doing this , but what an amazing option here . Can you tell us about that ?

Yes , so we have an adjoining party room that connects to the ultrasound room and families can come in and we can determine the gender with ultrasound and have a party at the same time .

And you reveal it right there , on the spot , real time . Yes , I love that . Yes , I imagine that this equipment is rather large , and can you tell me about the space that you work in ?

Yeah , so our ultrasound machine is in a large state of the art room . It is big enough to fit your friends and family . I would say it would fit 10 to 12 comfortably Nice . We have big flat screen TVs on either side of the room so you can just pick which angle you want to look at . And , yeah , we have a great time . You can keep it small and intimate , just mom and dad , or mom and dad and little ones . I have things to help entertain little ones as well and it's just a good time for everybody . That's awesome .

Can they bring in food and drinks , or do you offer food and drinks ?

Yes , so they can bring in their own stuff if they wish . I do offer finger foods and little cupcakes and lemonade and water . Yeah , and I'm , I set it all out , decorations and everything , and I clean up all the mess for them , so they don't have to do a thing Nope , just show up , just show them , have fun , figure out what they're having and have a great time with friends and family .

Packages Offered

, let's talk about your packages . You have quite a few packages and I want to go through each one briefly so that everyone knows . Let's talk about the Serenity Scan . That is $50 . That only takes 10 minutes .

Yes , one of our most popular packages is called the Serenity Scan and that is a 10-minute 2D scan . So that's your traditional ultrasound where you just get to watch baby wiggle about . Most of the time it is a mom wanting to come in and just watch her baby for a little while and listen to the heartbeat , and you get all digital copies of everything . So that can be from six weeks and up .

Okay , and then ? What is the difference between that and the sneak peak clinical ?

The sneak peak clinical includes that 10-minute ultrasound as well as a blood draw with a snap device on your arm and that gets sent out to a sneak peak and they will determine if it's a boy or girl .

Okay , gotcha , let's talk about the opening act . Tell me about that .

So the opening act is $60 and it starts from six weeks to 13 weeks . It is a 2D session . There's no time limit on that one , so it can extend past 10 minutes and we offer transvaginal imaging . So if you are at that six week mark and we may not be able to see baby good on top of the belly , we offer the transvaginal imaging just like you would have at the daughter's office .

So that gives it up close and more detailed . Look at baby as well . We look at the heartbeat . It doesn't include gender . Just because you're six to 13 weeks , you're still early and long . You get all digital copies of everything and you get the two four by six printouts .

Okay , and next we shall move on to the spotlight , which is $85 .

Oh , the spotlight , that's one of my favorites . The spotlight adds onto our Open and Act package and includes the 2D , 3d , 4d and HD live imaging and , as from eight to 13 weeks , also includes the heartbeat , as well as digital transfer of all your media and two , four by six printouts . And those detailed images of that little baby in there are amazing to me .

Since it's still early in gestation , it doesn't take the full 30 minutes , so it just depends .

a kind of like standard . Oh , if you did , I'm sure it's a popular thing on the internet Pistols and pearls .

Pistols or pearls ? Yeah , okay , so there is one , one package , that's the pistols and pearls , that's a hundred , and then there's another one called pistols and pearls plus , and that's one 45 . Tell me about the differences .

So the differences is that the pistols or pearls plus includes your 3D , 40 and HD live imaging Okay , and you get more printouts with that .

And how long does it take you to locate those pistols and pearls ?

So the pistols or pearls roughly would be 30 to 45 minutes total and that includes picture printout and all that as well and transfer images . The pistols or pearls is 14 to 24 weeks . It is $100 . It is the 2D session and we'll watch baby , listen to the heartbeat , and you get three , four by six printouts with that one and the pistols or pearls plus , which is $145 . That adds on the 2D , 3d 40 and HD live and the packages that add on the 3D 40 and HD imaging . They do last longer because you're really trying to get baby in a certain position and to get those beautiful pictures for mom and dad . Both of those do include gender . So that's when we're finding out baby's gender , if it's a boy or girl .

Yes , that's the big one , so that's the one that everybody loves to have , because you are really looking at the features of baby . So that one is $175 . It's 25 weeks and up and I can confirm gender at that point and we listen to the heartbeat . Yeah , sometimes sun shower to go to . Sometimes we have people that have family in town visiting for going to the beach and stuff like that and they want to do a little get together .

Sure , I want my mamas to know that if their baby does not cooperate at the time of their scan , that I always offer a free re-scan . Oh , yeah . I will do everything I can to get little one to cooperate . But if for some reason that day it doesn't happen , I will bring them back free of charge and we will try again , that's very nice of you to offer

Jennifer's Personal History

OK , let's go into your history a little bit . You've done medical ultrasounds for the last 12 years before you opened up your store . What made you go into this profession ?

Speaker 2 16:48

As a young mother , about 21 , 22 years old , my first child , madeline , was suspected to have a spinal defect when she was born with a tuft of hair on her lower back , just a little fuzzy patch of hair , and her pediatrician ordered a sacral ultrasound at the time . We went in . Of course I was completely terrified , of course , that something was wrong . But just watching the sonographers there was two in there at the time working together and just looking at everything and they were so awesome and I was just completely blown away with what they did and everything ended up being OK , but I just Very good . Yeah , it was like wow , I just need to look into this more and see if this is something that I want to do , and it was for sure .

Yeah 21 , 22 . I think I was 22 . Where did you study ? I went to Johnston Community College in Smithfield .

I just want to say that we actually were born at the same hospital , a little bit apart time wise . But yeah , we were both born in Kentston , right ? Yes , yeah , and where did you go to work after school ?

I actually got employed by OBGYN office right before I graduated , so I had a job wound up at professional women's health care in North Carolina and done .

you do Wilmington Work . I was working part-time at the time and staying home with my first born , madeline , and my second born , caleb , and my husband and I were both looking for a change , so I decided to go back to work full-time and I put some feelers out and got two job offers one in the Greensboro area and then one here in Wilmington . So we decided to move here . How long ago was that ? When you moved here . It was 2017 . So we've been here six years now . Okay , now .

I assume that since you've opened Tootsie Woodsees , that you are no longer a full-time employee ? Are you still working part-time ?

Speaker 2 18:48

I'm working what they call PR-ient now and that means as needed , so I work actually several different places just whenever they need help . Okay , and I work in general and OBGYN both private facilities and at hospital . Okay .

Rewards/Challenges of Fetal Imaging

Your job . It has to be very rewarding . It has to be yes . What would you say is the most rewarding part ?

Speaker 2 19:10

Just the happiness that I get to be a part of . When I worked full-time at an OBGYN office , there was a happy moments , but there was a lot of unhappy moments , really , yeah , I would have days where I would have two to three fetal demises at anatomy scans that had really significant abnormalities , yeah , so that stuff weighs on you after time .

I didn't think about that so after 12 years , I was just like I really need a change . I really want to do this and it's just something I've always wanted to do throughout my career and just decided to take a leap .

So you do have people coming in for the scans pretty early in the pregnancy . Have you ever come upon something where you saw an abnormality that you recognized and you're like I think you should go see your doctor ?

Speaker 2 20:04

Yes , you have . Yes , so there's been a couple of fetal demises and a couple abnormalities , so I helped them reach out to their doctors .

That's got to be tough . Yes , so I was going to ask you what the biggest challenge was , but I think I probably hit on it . Yes , definitely .

Okay , so we said you were born and raised in the Kinston area .

Yeah , born in Kinston , spent most of my childhood in Garner , though Lots of families still left in LaGrange in Kinston , so I always love going and visiting them . I have family there too .

My husband , Jason . He's been so supportive throughout this . He probably thought I was crazy at first , but we've been married 23 years now . We're high school sweethearts . That is so cool . Yeah , we went to high school together , obviously , and then we got engaged about a year after my first year of college and he was in the Marine Corps , actually , and he was stationed out at Camp Lejeune for some time and we got married and we have lived in several different places and then , once he got out of the Marine Corps , we came back to North Carolina to settle down . What other places did you all live ? We lived in Kings Bay , Georgia , and 29 Palms , California as well .

So my husband's also Marine Corps and he spent some time at 29 Palms as well . He was in Buford , South Carolina . He was never in Georgia , but it's something we hear a lot living in this area .
